ObamaCare is just another name for The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which is also referred as Affordable Care Act, ACA, or PPACA. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is a health reform law signed on March 23, 2010, by President Barack Obama.

The Trump administration has made some major changes to the law, however the Affordable Care Act is still the law of the land. Americans who choose to get covered during open enrollment still have protections for pre-existing conditions.

What it Does

The Affordable Care Act provides more Americans in the United States with health insurance based on their income bracket eligibility, it helps improve the quality of healthcare, it regulates the health insurance industry, and it reduces health care spending in the US.

How

Obamacare aims to to achieve all its goals by implementing series of regulations, taxes, tax breaks, mandates, and subsidies. Some of the benefits and advantages of Obamacare include:

• Insurance companies cannot deny coverage to people with preexisting conditions
• It offers Americans new benefits, rights, and protections in regards to their health insurance
• It sets up a health insurance marketplace where people can purchase federally regulated and subsidizes health insurance.
• It expands Medicaid.
• It improves Medicare.
• It expands employer coverage to employees.
• Introduce new taxes to top earners, and it gives tax breaks to lower earners.

And these are just a fraction of the more than a 1000 provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

When: Open Enrollment

Health insurance can be obtained every year only during open enrollment. Open enrollment for 2020 for the Health Insurance Marketplace will run from November 1st, 2019 to December 15th, 2019.

Individuals and families without access to employer coverage, Medicaid/CHIP, Medicare or another type of “minimum essential coverage” need to enroll during open enrollment or qualify for a special enrollment period.
